South Mountain hike

More birthday cake!

Baptism of Jennifer Rogers and son, Yuma

7/25/16 letter

Hola,
This week was good. Hermana Mena's visa came, so she leaves for Argentina on August 1. I'm super sad to see her go and it's been super fun to train her, but she'll be awesome in Argentina. I finally finished my last exchange for the transfer on Saturday with Hermana Standring. On Wednesday, we had our zone conference and we got to get to know President and Sister Christensen better. They're super cool.
My birthday was really fun. The sisters I live with got me balloons and made brownies and for dinner, a member took us to get pizza, wings, and pizzookies. On Tuesday, our whole zone was together and my zone leaders bought a cake. And on Wednesday, our ward mission leader got me a tres leches cake and like a billion tamales. Let's just say, I had a lot of sugar this week.

This week, we were finally able to find Ediberta, this lady who we met more than a month ago and accepted to be baptized and then literally disappeared. But when we saw her again, she was like "which day am I getting baptized again?" She hadn't forgotten anything and she actually has been to the Mesa temple visitors center years ago with a member she knew.

We also found a new family to teach. On Sunday evening, literally no one was home and we tried so many doors, but no one opened. We went to try this guy Santos that we had talked with on the street the other day and he wasn't super interested, but he said we could come back.
His daughter told us he wasn't home, so we went across the street to knock on the door of a potential and the daughter ran across the street and told us that her mom wanted to talk to us. We went back and had an awesome sit down lesson with them. They really want to get closer to God and they've been wanting to find a church here in Phoenix. The daughter is coming to mutual on Tuesday too.

This morning for pday, the sisters I live with and I went to South Mountain to go hiking and that was super fun. I'll send some pictures.
Sorry, there's not a whole lot of news this week. We had a lot of people cancel on us. Have a great week.
Love,

Birthday girl, no. 20!

7/18/16 letter

Hola family,
This week was awesome! A lot of stuff happened. Margarito got baptized on Saturday night. It was really cool and he was super happy. For a special musical number at the baptism, I played guitar while Hermana Mena and a couple elders sang "Cuando me bautice." The video is on my Facebook if you want to see it. Margarito got confirmed in Sunday and will get the preisthood next Sunday and then the following Tuesday, we are going to go to the temple with him to do baptisms.
Also, we were teaching this lady named Adriana who has been meeting with missionaries since 2009 and never come to church. She's super cool and understands the gospel perfectly, she has just always said that she'll go to church when she feels like it and won't make any promises. On Friday, we had a super spiritual lesson with her and at the end she said (in Spanish) "I haven't made any promises to missionaries for years, but today I feel it. I will be at church on Sunday." And she came!!! And said she'd be there next week.
On Monday night, we did a Family Home Evening in our ward mission leaders house and it was super fun. Our ward mission leader's nonmember sister, niece and, nephew who just came from Mexico were there and our investigators, Angelo and Valeria who really want an eternal family. We taught the restoration and then played pictionary and ate food. It was really good for Angelo and Valeria to make friends and feel comfortable in the ward. We had 20 member present lessons this week which is awesome.
Also, I did back to back exchanges on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, Hermana Mena went to Mesa while Hermana Luthy came into my area and on Thursday, Hermana Mena went to Tempe and Hermana Pierce came to Phoenix. It was pretty stressful, but I only have 2 more exchanges to go on for the rest of the transfer which ends August 3.
On Sunday night was the first New Convert Devotional with President Christensen. It was super cool. This guy spoke who read half of the Book of Mormon in one day and then got baptized a couple weeks later! It was the last time I got to see my trainer, Hermana Sedgwick, before she goes home in a couple weeks.
I hit my year mark this week. For my birthday tomorrow, Yozelyn, a member from Aguila ward who opened her mission call on Sunday going to Torreon Mexico is taking Hermana Mena and I out to eat. On Saturday, a member bought me a piñata and we ate carne asada quesadillas.
Hope you have a great week!

Angelo and Valeria's family

Hola,
This week was so good! Our investigator, Margarito, is getting baptized on Saturday, and he is sooooo prepared and awesome. We went through the baptismal interview questions with him and he answered them all perfectly. I also found out that this lady I taught in Yuma, Jennifer Rogers, is getting baptized on Saturday too. Our investigators Angelo and Valeria who came to church for the first time last week accepted a baptismal date for August 13 and want an eternal family with their 3 young sons. In one of our lessons, we showed them a picture of a family from the Yuma branch dressed in white with their
4 little boys in front of the San Diego temple and they said "Wow!
That looks like a fresh start. I want that for my family." They're super cool!

On Friday night, I got to go to the Mesa temple visitors center with our ward mission leader and his teenage niece and nephew who recently moved in with him, who we are teaching. After watching the Restoration movie there, Ana (16) said (in Spanish) "I had a lot of doubts and questions, but the video answered all of them." Their mom came over from Mexico just barely on Saturday and she came to church on Sunday and felt like everything said was exactly meant for her.

And we were able to find our investigator, Porfilio, twice this week who we can never find. He had read in the Book of Mormon and gave us a play by play of what happened in the chapter and compared it to his own life. It was way cool.

This week I did exchanges with Hermana Sedgwick and it was so fun to be with my trainer again. Also, on Wednesday, I got to go to MLC (missionary leadership council) with the zone leaders, the assistants, and President Christensen and received trainings on the spirit in the finding, teaching repentance, and baptizing converts. Then on Thursday, the zone leaders and I relayed all the trainings to our zone in 2 hour long zone meeting.

Fourth of July was fun. It was our pday, so we taught from 4-7:00 and then drove up South Mountain and watched the fireworks in the whole valley. Today for pday, we played laser tag with our zone and it was way fun. Sorry I'm writing so late today. We did laser tag early and then went shopping and now I'm finally to wifi. Thanks for the package. It was great.

Phoenix temple

7/4/16 letter

Hola family,

This week was super great! On Tuesday, Hermana Mena and I got to go to the Phoenix temple with Maria Ortiz (who got baptized June 11) to do baptisms. It was so cool and it was the first time I've been to the Phoenix temple, which was dedicated about 2 years ago. All of our mission goes to the Mesa temple, but Phoenix zone is special and gets to go to the Phoenix temple even though it's pretty far out of our mission. Maria loved it and asked when she could come back again.
She's seriously the best. She's fasted the last 2 fast Sunday's and she started saving aside her tithing money before she even got baptized. She's already into Jacob in her Book of Mormon reading.
Unfortunately, she's in the Aguila ward (the one I don't cover
anymore) so I don't get to see her on Sunday's or teach her the new member lessons. But on Wednesday, I got to see her again because she came to do family history at the family history center and we were there too doing family history with Mari, who got baptized the week after Maria, but in Montaña del Sur ward in the Elders area that we now cover. We were able to find 6 family names for Mari to take to the temple so we're trying to get her there as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, President and Sister Toone came around for their final goodbyes before finishing their mission. On Saturday, we got to meet President Christensen and his wife and have a short interview with each of them. They're super cool!

This week our investigator, Margarito, accepted a baptismal date for July 16 and he's super ready. He was like "yeah I stopped smoking a month ago and I stopped drinking 5 years ago and yeah I won't drink coffee anymore." We also found a young family to teach and they came to church on Sunday for the first time! And our ward mission leader's teenage niece and nephew just moved in with him from Mexico and have come to church twice and are taking the lessons from us. And one of the young women's leaders took her nonmember niece to girls camp this last week and her niece wants to start coming to church and taking the lessons.

I started doing exchanges this week. I'll do about 2 a week for the rest of the transfer. On Saturday, Hermana Sigaran came into my area and it was super fun. She's way cute and 4'11" tall. She was born in El Salvador. It's funny because she has the same first name as my companion, Hermana Mena, and Hermana Mena is Salvadoreña too. Hermana Mena and I are still getting along great and working hard together.

I hope you have a happy 4th of July. Eat lots of bbq for me.
Love,
